The assessment during App Rescue differs from a standard code review in several ways. First, it is a broader product and functionality assessment: the application may be partially broken, unstable or limited by unresolved bugs, blockers or incomplete implementation, so the review often needs to understand not only the codebase but also how the application is supposed to work from the user, business and functional perspective. Second, it focuses on unfinished or blocked development: App Rescue usually applies to projects that are not fully completed, are stuck mid-development or are missing critical scope, so the review considers both the current state and the planned functionality, including whether the existing architecture, codebase and integrations can realistically support the remaining scope. Third, it is about recovery planning, not only code quality: a standard code review focuses on quality, maintainability, architecture, security, scalability and technical risks, while App Rescue Stage 1 also identifies what is preventing the project from moving forward and defines a practical recovery path, what should be fixed, rebuilt, stabilized, deprioritized or clarified. Finally, some projects involve urgent production issues or major failures, where we may propose temporary stabilization or quick fixes to restore basic functionality first, followed by more stable long-term improvements, depending on your priorities such as speed of recovery, budget, stability and long-term maintainability.

Your involvement is important, especially during the initial assessment stage. We usually need access to existing documentation, code repositories, environments, backlog items and any available product knowledge. We may also ask for several clarification sessions to understand the intended functionality, current blockers and business priorities. After that, most of the technical investigation is handled by our team, with periodic updates and checkpoints.

No, you don't need to stop development. We review a current snapshot of your project state and base our assessment on it. If anything changes as work continues, we update our findings and recommendations accordingly, so your team can keep moving in parallel.

In most cases, development can begin shortly after Stage 1 is completed, once priorities, risks and the recovery plan are aligned. If the application has urgent production issues, we can also discuss starting with stabilization or critical fixes first, before moving into broader feature development, refactoring or completion of the remaining scope.

Lack of documentation is common in App Rescue projects. Our team can still assess the application by reviewing the codebase, environments, database structure, user flows, available designs, backlog items and the working application itself. However, missing documentation may increase the time needed for investigation, especially if the system has complex business logic, integrations or incomplete functionality.

Yes. App Rescue does not always need to cover the entire product at once. If your priority is to restore key functionality, prepare for launch or unblock a specific part of the system, the assessment and recovery plan can be focused on the most critical areas first. Broader improvements, refactoring or long-term optimization can be planned separately after the urgent blockers are addressed.
